Deathly HallowsPotter book under guard at secret U.S. warehouse

The answer to whether Harry Potter lives or dies lies in a stack of sealed boxes, shrouded as if hidden beneath an invisibility cloak.

Barnes & Noble, the world's largest book retailer, has started taking delivery of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, at a warehouse somewhere in the northeastern United States.

With its ending wrapped in secrecy and high security surrounding its distribution, the book will go on sale around the world at midnight on Friday.

Rowling to give reading of new Potter
Deathly HallowsLONDON - Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling will mark the release of the final book in the hugely popular series by giving a midnight reading and signing in London.

About 1,700 lucky fans in Britain and Ireland will win a chance to have Rowling sign a copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The event will take place at the Natural History Museum on July 21, the day the book is released.

The first 500 randomly selected winners will also be invited to attend the midnight reading. Timed tickets will be issued for the subsequent book signing, which is expected to last until dawn. All the winners will receive a free copy of the book.

Seven U.S. residents can enter to win round-trip tickets to London and hotel accommodations to participate in the reading.

Entries to the free contest are available online at the Web sites of publishing houses Scholastic Inc. and Bloomsbury, who are sponsoring the event.

The book is the seventh and final installment about the adventures of the schoolboy wizard and Rowling previously has said that two characters die in the final book.

The Potter books have sold more than 325 million copies worldwide with translations into 64 languages.

Deathly HallowsNEW YORK (Reuters) - Author J.K. Rowling appealed to people on Monday to leave the ending of the final Harry Potter book as a surprise and not spoil the mystery for fans of the best-selling series about the boy wizard.

Rowling's comments were sparked by a note on April 28 on fan site, The Leaky Cauldron (www.the-leaky-cauldron.org), saying it had received "spoiler" e-mails from people claiming to know the contents of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

"We're a little under three months away, now, and the first distant rumblings of the weirdness that usually precedes a Harry Potter publication can be heard on the horizon," Rowling wrote on her Web site wwww.jkrowling.com on Monday.
